چکیده

This thesis details the design, execution and evaluation of a new type of display technology, known as Display Blocks. Display Blocks are a response to two major limitations of current displays: visualization and interaction. Each device consist of six organic light emitting diode screens, arranged in a cubic form factor. I explore the possibilities that this type of display holds for data visualization, manipulation and exploration. To this end, I also propose a series of accompanying applications that leverage the design of the displays. To begin assessing the potential of this platform and to define future directions in which to expand this research, I report on a series of interviews I conducted regarding the potential of Display Blocks with relevant technologists, interaction designers, data visualizers and educators. The work encompassed in this thesis shows the promise of display technologies which use their form factor as a cue to understanding their content. Thesis Supervisor: Pattie Maes, PhD Title: Alex W. A Multi-Display Environment for Community Planning

We describe an integrated, tabletop-centered multi-display environment for engaging the public in collaborative community planning. Activities are anchored in a multi-touch tabletop display augmented with multiple large-screen displays and smaller hand-held displays to foster collaborative co-creation. To make the tool accessible for non-technical users, we provide familiar visualizations and i...

Information visualization on large, high-resolution displays: Issues, challenges, and opportunities

Larger, higher-resolution displays are becoming accessible to a greater number of users as display technologies decrease in cost and software for the displays improves. The additional pixels are especially useful for information visualization where scalability has typically been limited by number of pixels available on a display. But how will visualizations for larger displays need to fundament...

Perspective Cursor

Multi-display environments and smart meeting rooms are now becoming more common. These environments build a shared display space from variety of devices: tablets, projected surfaces, tabletops, and traditional monitors. Since the different display surfaces are usually not organized in a single plane, traditional schemes for stitching the displays together can cause problems for interaction. How...

High-Performance Scalable Graphics Architecture for High-Resolution Displays

We present the Scalable Adaptive Graphics Environment (SAGE), a graphics streaming architecture for supporting collaborative scientific visualization environments with potentially hundreds of megapixels of contiguous display resolution. In collaborative scientific visualization it is crucial to share high resolution visualizations as well as high definition video among groups of collaborators a...

Proxemics for Information Visualization on Wall-Sized Displays

Information visualizations are typically designed for working at desktop-sized displays using a mouse. However, visualizations on wall-sized, high-resolution displays may benefit from using users’ physical movement as input. We adapt proxemics for information visualization in order to explore how visualizations may change in response to for instance users’ distance, movement, and orientation re...
